A large broken red-white-blue plastic bag was picked up from Whitehead Beach during a clean-up service on 22 October 2023 organised by Zone 22 of Lions Clubs International District 303 Hong Kong & Macao, China and co-organised by Shatin District Councillor Osman Cheng. Actually, there are a number of beach and ocean clean-up activities organized by various Lions Clubs. For example, for the fifth consecutive year, Lions Club of Hong Kong IFC jointly organised a dive against debris service with International Association of Hand-in-hand Divers (HK) (IAHD) on 24 September 2023. The following link is a highlight of the service:

Plastic ocean is real and kills birds and marine creatures. Just in case anyone wonder how ocean debris has polluted our environment, I strongly recommend the documentary film, Our Planet II by Netflex. Chapter 1 of the film, “World on the Move”, depicts how different kinds of animals move around continents and oceans. One of them is Laysan albatross, a seabird inhabiting the North Pacific, which has been severely affected by ocean plastic. Plastic ocean is real and kills the unlucky bird taking too much plastic leading to starve to death. They ingest plastic debris, leading to blockages, malnutrition, and death. Entanglement in fishing gear and nest contamination also harm them.

To address plastic pollution in the ocean, several “solutions” have been implemented. Strict regulations and bans on single-use plastics can reduce their production and use. Proper waste management systems and recycling infrastructure should be established and enforced. Encouraging plastic alternatives and sustainable materials, along with increasing public awareness and education, can promote responsible plastic use. International cooperation, engaging businesses, and fostering partnerships are crucial. Investing in clean-up initiatives and long-term monitoring is essential. By implementing these measures collectively, we can work towards reducing plastic pollution and preserving the health of our only planet for future generations.
