Who Owns Your Company's Creative Ideas?
DESCRIPTION

Who owns your company's patents and trademarks? Is it the business, or the employees who may have devised them in the first place? And what about copyright, industrial design and the other intangible assets that come under the umbrella of intellectual property (IP)? Along with this growth pain, various complexities around employment law go hand in hand with expanding SMEs and start-ups, including in relation to issues around the use of contractors.

IP is a complex area and is often not a priority for business owners, especially SMEs and start-ups. But if your business does not have clear guidelines, employees could move on, taking your company's innovative products, systems or ideas with them.

Conflict between employer and employee in IP is a growing concern, and IP disputes can be costly. Businesses should rigorously protect all of their IP assets, which includes ensuring that they understand their employees' rights.

The Chamber has organized a roundtable luncheon to help you review your IP and employment strategies. Helen Colquhoun, Hong Kong Head of Employment, and Ed Chatterton, Asia Co-head of Intellectual Property and Technology, at DLA Piper, will discuss key issues including:

- The latest trends in employment and IP law;
- Employment rights and IP law in Hong Kong;
- Managing employment disputes over ownership of IP; and
- Tips to help businesses stay compliant and manage contractors

Speaker(s)
Helen Colquhoun, Partner, Head of Employment, Hong Kong
Edward Chatterton, Partner, Co-Head of IPT, Asia
