The concept of "solution selling" has been around for a long time. Sales people know the importance of helping customers make the right buying decision. However, knowing it and doing it are very different when the rubber hits the road! Many sales people continue to focus on their products' features and benefits, talking incessantly to "convince" the buyer, and memorizing "sales techniques" to overcome objections. The focus is thus no longer on customers and their real needs; but on the products/services, and how great their organization is. Nowadays, customers are very savvy. Before they make a purchase, they would have done their own research on the web. They know what they want, product prices and comments, and what's out there in the marketplace. By the time they get to speak with a sales person, they have pretty much made up their mind on what they want. It is imperative for professional sales people to continue to hone their skills, continue to understand the needs in the marketplace, and develop their capabilities to compete in this fast changing, fast moving business world. If we want to have long term business, referrals, upsell, and cross-sell opportunities, we must get over "ourselves", our products/services, and how great our company is, and start focusing on customers. 1.
